THE Immigration Minister has demanded more information from two hip-hop artists before they are allowed to tour Australia next month.

The move follows revelations in the Herald Sun yesterday about their shady pasts.

Minister Kevin Andrews raised concerns about R&B star Akon and rapper The Game, who are headlining the "Roc tha Block" concert on August 11 at Vodafone Arena.

Each has lengthy rap sheets including jail time and outstanding charges.

The minister's intervention -- which has the backing of family groups -- raises the prospect of a ban similar to that put on rapper Snoop Dogg, who was denied a visa in April.

The Immigration Department has requested more documentation from The Game (real name Jayceon Terrell Taylor), who has been arrested several times and has outstanding charges against him.

A visa application was yet to be lodged on behalf of Akon, said Kate Walshe, a spokeswoman for the minister.

"To be able to come into the country they would need a visa and this is not assured at this stage," Ms Walshe said.

Concert promoter Dwayne Cross said Akon's application would be lodged by Monday.

Akon and The Game are headlining "Roc tha Block" with veteran act Naughty By Nature.

Thousands of fans who have already bought tickets could be left disappointed if a ban is enforced on the stars.

Mr Cross said he would think about postponing the tour if there were problems in obtaining visas.

Akon had been allowed into Australia in 2005 for a promotional visit, he said.
