MTV Live sessions is back in town again, this time, bringing the multifaceted singer Akon to stage at Ruums Club in Kuala Lumpur on Jan 15.

The exclusive showcase, MTV presents Akon Live, will be hosted by MTV VJ Colby who shares Akon’s passion for hip hop music and culture.

Akon will be performing popular tracks from his second album Konvicted, which he co-produced and co-wrote.

Konvicted balances streetwise swagger, studio originality and common sense to create one of the most honest releases of 2006. It features tracks recorded with Eminem (the first single Smack That), Snoop Dogg (I Want to Love You) and Styles P (who laced Akon’s debut hit single Locked Up).

Smack That soared all the way to No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart last November and became a popular mobile phone ringtone for many fans.

The son of accomplished jazz musician Mor Thiam, Senegal-born Akon was introduced to varied musical styles early on.

“I grew up listening to all kinds of music,” he said.

Everything fell into place for Akon when Devyne Stephens, connoisseur of artiste development and CEO of Upfront Entertainment, began promoting Akon’s demo and immediately received several offers from major labels.

A deal was signed in 2003 with Universal/Motown and debut album Trouble sold more than three million copies worldwide.

Impressing both music critics and the disc-buying public with his well-crafted R&B and unique voice, Akon has proven himself as both a brilliant storyteller and gifted musician. His unique style was a shock to the system. In 2004 a New York Times article praised him as a “groundbreaking artiste”.

Since his debut release, Akon has travelled the world and collaborated with everyone from Snoop Dogg to Ladysmith Black Mambazo. His Konvict Music imprint, which will be distributed by Universal/Interscope Records, boasts a roster that includes T-Pain and former TLC member Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas.
